International University of Santa!
Santa is already preparing for Christmas
DALLAS, June 25 (UPI) -- It was Christmas during the weekend at the
Hyatt Regency in Dallas, as mall Santas brushed up on their skills
in two days of Santa classes.
Tim Connaghan, or "Santa Tim," leads the seminar, in which future
mall Santas learn the dos and don'ts of the modern Santa, The Dallas
Morning News reported.
"Behind the Red Suit -- the Business of Santa" offers tips for
etiquette, like toning down a booming "ho ho ho" when small children
are around. Also, Connaghan advises Santas never to correct,
reprimand or deny a child.
The seminar also offers tips on how to get around modern obstacles
like the "Merry Christmas" vs. "Seasons Greetings" controversy --
which has become a stickier issue as U.S. culture has become more
ethnically diverse.
"Here's my best advice," Connaghan told the newspaper. "If someone
says 'Merry Christmas' to you, say it back to them. Otherwise, say
'Season's greetings' or 'Happy holidays.'"
Sixteen Santas -- and even a few Mrs. Clauses -- attended
Connaghan's seminar, which he calls the International University of
Santa. By Copyright 2007 United Press International, Inc.

| MACEDONIA -
You've heard of Christmas in July, but Santa Claus at summer camp is
a new one.
For the first time this summer, Santa's Children Christmas Village
in Macedonia will offer a day camp for children in southwest Iowa.
Orien Hodges of Walnut, president of the non-profit organization,
said it has been a goal of the charity for children in crisis to
host a summer camp since it began 10 years ago.
"The original plan was to start the first camp in 2010," said
Hodges, who has visited nearly 10,000 children with disabilities and
life-threatening illnesses dressed as St. Nick and provided them
with Christmas gifts.
"We're a couple of years ahead of schedule. Getting the old
Macedonia school as a headquarters for Santa's Village (in 2005) has
allowed us to start this three-day-a-week camp as a pilot program."
Hodges also credited the camp director, Fran Sillau, who has worked
extensively with Very Special Arts Nebraska, a program geared toward
young people with physical and developmental disabilities.
Sillau will be at the camp registration event next Saturday, June
24, at Santa's Village from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to talk about the
activities that will be offered to children ages 6-15
"We're going to be doing a combination of creative dramatics, sports
and crafts to stimulate the kids' imaginations," Sillau said.
Also happening at the summer camp kick-off event will be a lunch
served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be followed by a vocal
performance by Henderson native Susan Brown.
The events will be held outdoors and attendees are asked to provide
their own lawn chairs.
Camp will officially begin July 3 and continue until the start of
the school year. The hours of operation will be Tuesday mornings
from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 2:30
to 5:30 p.m.
Thus far, Promise Partners of Council Bluffs has provided the camp
with a $1,000 grant for sports equipment, and additional fundraising
activities are planned to cover other costs. Hodges hopes to make
the camp free for children.
